and a deadline now set, fed up with terrorists, everyday rib yeah and the government fighting back. and how the murder of four americans are prompting a dramatic new crackdown against rogue militias. also, this truck and the driver dangling over the edge. ♪ fox news is america's election headquarters and tonight, governor mitt romney getting ready to hold a rally in the key swing state of of colorado. colorado's 9 electoral votes crucial if the governor hopes to win in november. and part of a tour this week and ten days away from the first presidential debate. our steve centanni following the story for us tonight in washington. >> and mitt romney is diving into a flurry of battle ground, 9 in colorado and

three day stop in ohio and then on to virginia. carried by president obama four years ago. the candidates forging ahead even though the republicans say the campaign needs a turn around. and it it does not need a turn ard. and the g.o.p. chairman over the leaked video last week, he sees a silver lining. >> i think we can look back at last week as a campaign in a couple months and say this was the defining week in both campaigns, where i think both campaigns are crystallizing around a central theme, which is going to be what kind of future do we want for our kids and grandkids. >> and meantime, president obama is planning his own trip to ohio later on in the week after visiting the u.n. tomorrow and tuesday. and these campaign stops and swing states come just ten days ahead of the first presidential debate, and

today, the president's team playing the expectations game, giving romney the edge in those debates. >> and mitt romney, i think, has an advantage because he's been through 20 of these debates in the primaries over the last year. and he even bragged that he was declared the winner in 16 of those debates and i so, i think in that sense, having been through this much more recently than president obama, i think he starts with an advantage. >> and the polls show obama leading by a few points in many of the swing states though many are within the margin of error and the race could tighten further, harris. >> and now let's go to libya and the terror attack on the u.s. consulate that killed four americans. new details coming out showing the terrorists behind the assault may have known a lot more than previously thought. and here is what we know so far. the attack appears to have been coordinated well in advance and likely carried out as part after joint operation between two groups, the fbi, looking into whether it was an

inside job, and working now to find out just how much the terrorists really knew about our consulate and who was in there at the time of the hit. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge. >> on the sunday talk shows ahead of the house intelligence committee saying the terrorists seemed to know more than the consulate. >> and there is some indication they may have known that the ambassador was there or in the area at the time of the attack, but 9/11 is probably more important to that equation than even the the be ambassador. >> as for the libyan security forces melted away when the attack unfolded, an intelligence source on the ground in libya telling that 100 militants attacked the consulate adding one thing for sure, the 17th brigade was nowhere to be found and the americans were left on their own in the assault on the stevens' compound and the evidence points to a joint oranges between the al-qaeda affiliate in north african and ansar al sharia.

and it supports the establishment of an islam state. as for the catalyst, the head of the house intelligence committee saying there's no strong evidence the amateurish video clip on youtube prompted the benghazi assault. last monday fox news was first to report there was no sizable demonstration at the consulate when the attack unfolded. it was not a demonstration that led out of control that led to the attack. the chairman. house committee state that had today. >> i see no information showing there was a protest going on as you've seen around any other embassy. it was clearly designed to be an attack. >> the washington in not commenting, but agents are on the ground in libya. >> let's stay with libya just a moment, something maybe two people could have seen coming, a slip there in the violence, now it's aimed at the extremists behind the terror attack that killed our ambassador and other three

americans, libya's president, ordered all rogue, unregistered militias to disband by tuesday. and civilian protesters angry over the attack on the u.s. consulate stormed the militia compound and set fire to some of the buildings and remember, we showed you that on fox report last night. we're told if the militias do not comply with the libyan president's order, the libyan army will use force to take them out. our greg palkot is in libya streaming live now from the the capital city of tripoli. greg, how real is this militia crackdown and how significant? >> harris, so far it seems to be working and authorities tell us here in tripoli, for example, today authorities, security forces round out the rogue militia from one base and comes back to the dramatic scenes we've been seeing earlier this week from the eastern libyan city of benghazi and storming the compounds here and this is what many people have wanted after helping to topple gaddafi last year, and some of these militants, some of these

islamic have stayed in power and capped off the force with attack on the u.s. consulate and some have remained and skeptical about the and think it might be a trick by the militants and maybe a tactical retreat. >> how has it had an impact on the consulate. >> the fallout could be good for the investigation into the killing, the word we're getting tonight from benghazi, things are calm there and authorities are in control. the fbi team, which is come into this country, in tripoli, this might now allow them to get over to benghazi and the crime scene. still, it remains that suspects might simply scatter. for example, fox news quoting intelligence sources last week, a militant with al-qaeda ties, could have played a major role in the killing of

the ambassador. and the head of a militia in one eastern libyan city, that militia disbanded this weekend and militia members have fled. >> harris: so, greg, we know how the libyan citizens are expressing how they feel about the militias, what is their opinion of us, the americans in their country? >> well, we heard in that rally on friday, in benghazi, and led to the storm of the compound some real support for american sorrow for the loss of the ambassador and i have heard that and we have he heard that on the street from the libyans in the past couple of days. the problem is, what people are watching is, if and when the u.s. decides possibly to take some more aggressive action in this country against those thought to be responsible for the killing of ambassador stevens and others, there could be some fallout from that. some flashback from that, back to you, harris. >> more to come on this, greg palkot on the job for us in that country, libya, greg,

whop two-thirds of our economy and that's why wall street will be watching closely this week. when the latest consumer spending numbers are released, it's just one of several important indications due out this week that could provide a valuable look at health, the true health of the economy and it could also shake up your 401(k). senior business correspondent and anchor of bulls and bears, brenda buttner has more. >> harris, what's the health of the economy this week? we find out by looking at you. reports on your confidence and what you are doing with your wallet are the big numbers out. really big. >> and consumer spending makes up two-thirds of all economic activity. so what you take out of your pocket terms how fast the economy will take off. most predictions are, you're still cautious and not all that confident, and consumer spending forecasts predict americans likely increase purchases by about 1/2 a percent in august. now, normally it's not a horrible number, but the headline high is a darker picture. much of that was publicly spent at the pump and gas

ed rollins is former campaign director for the reagan-bush team in 1984 and a fox contributor, a special guest. >> a pleasure, how are you. >> harris: i'm great. the swing states that the president won in 2008, when you you look at the polls, up or down for either gentlemen is tight for the margins. >> extremely close races. last time the president won them all. nine in play swing states he won every one. in order for romney to basically get to 270 electoral votes he has to winnowo, has to win florida, he has to win virginia and basically win north carolina and something else and maybe it's colorado, maybe it's an iowa, maybe it's new hampshire to get to 270, but if he doesn't winn ohio and doesn't win virginia or florida the likelihood of getting to 270 is very

difficult. >> harris: let's talk about the mood among the electorate in some of the states. 7 of 11 key states, the unemployment rate went up in the last month. didn't see at that widely reported, we had it here on the fox report. how much trouble could that spell for the current president? >> it could cause a lot of trouble. it could cause a lot of trouble, particularly we have one more monthly numbers before the election and if those are severe as they were last month, it reminds people of that failure on that economic front. you know, i think that romney's going to try to make this campaign about leadership, and who can lead the economy back to a place to create jobs, and certainly, you've got a lot of uncertainty in the foreign policy arena that obviously you don't want to sit and second guess the president every day, only need one president at a time, but needless to say still has effect. >> for those of us keeping score and i am one of them, over the past week alone. mr. romney attended five public events and three rallies and more than a dozen, as i mentioned he's in

colorado and critics inside his own party say they're not seeing enough of him. what are the concerns. >> if you live in one of the nine states, wall to wall commercial froms both sides and you actually see both candidates and the vice-presidential candidates. if you live in california, or new york, or texas, you probably won't see a candidate, there's probably 30 states that have been written off to one side or the other side, and probably eight or nine very, very competitive. >> with the exessential of a huge weekend of fund raising by governor romney this weekend, in fact, some people were scratching his heads, what is he doing in california, well, he raised 6 million dollars at an event yesterday. why go to a state where you know you possibly can't win. >> you'll not see that with the exception of fund raising and those fund raising states are texas, are new york, are california. . >> harris: and let's talk about something you just mentioned though, if you're not in one of the battle ground states, as a voter what do you do. >> you basically almost don't see a campaign. the only part of the campaign you see is what you watch on fox news or something else.

>> harris: is it still important for whom you vote? >> absolutely, it's critical who you vote for, there are senate races and gubernatorial races and congressional races. unfortunately we're down to a point where it's eight or nine states that matter in the presidential, the rest are pretty much decided one way or the other and one more thing, we begin this week where we had the early voting. and literally, 30% or a third of all people who vote, will vote early or absentee battle. critical. >> and some will vote before the debate or won't see the final ads or on the trail. instead of old days make it to election day and every effort get your vote on election day, today, a third of the vote have already voted. >> harris: and what advantage could governor romney have in terms of that. >> in one sense, i don't think there's a great advantage to his side. it's all about having good absentee ballot, get out the vote efforts. president obama had an

extraordinary effort last night and republicans have worked hard to try and catch up. >> harris: and some people have lost some intensity for mr. obama. >> the interesting thing, the intensity is start to go come back and last week and ten days, picked up in the polls and intensity of his voters is watching up to what the republicans are. >> harris: you mentioned ten, operative number, ten days away from the debate. and some analysts say a shift, what type of shift could we see in the campaign. >> romney had a rough couple of weeks, would i expect in the next week or, two, much better and he has to give a couple of big speeches one on foreign policy and economic policy and everywhere he goes he's got to make his case that convince people he can do the job more effectively than the president. >> harris: ed rollins, good to see you. >> my pleasure, thank you. >> harris: will hillary clinton run for president in 2016? her husband, former bill clinton was asked that
